When to Call the Vet
As with any behavior problem, have your vet take a look at your
dog before you start any
corrections.
As mentioned above,
corrections made by the owners / handlers rarely work and in most cases their
dogs simply learn that they just need to wait for you to leave, in order to access the food.
So this does not necessarily mean harsh physical punishment of
dogs, but may also include what most traditional trainers refer to
as corrections.

correction eventually can increase leash reactivity
as now seeing another
dog creates unpleasant things like verbal
corrections and leash

as a
correction for a fear - biting
dog.
The introduction of punishment, or
corrections as balanced trainers call them, into a training program impacts on the
dog's ability to learn.
The few I've seen: the
dogs have the e-collars still on, the
dogs are getting zapped during the videos and not doing the obedience off leash without
corrections, the
dogs aren't doing the work more than a few feet from the handlers, and the
dogs aren't doing anything nearly
as difficult or precise
as what an AKC
dog would do, off leash, in a basic obedience competition.
However, if you have a large, powerful or aggressive
dog, you may need a
correction collar (also known
as a choke collar) or harness, at least while you are training your
dog, to make sure you can keep it in check.
Further, because it is being said when the
dog is doing it right rather than during a
correction the
dog doesn't create any negative association with the command
as the latter is likely to cause.

as «yank and crank», where

dogs around to give
corrections.
I can see that in spite of my efforts I did not train through the

The issue is whether the harsh
corrections are being used when the
dog has no understanding
as to why they are receiving the
corrections in the first place.
So using the
correction on the
dog who has already failed using positive methods can benefit the
dog as well
as the handler.
As such, educating people with aggressive
dogs to stop inappropriately using harsh
corrections and to get them to put the time in on properly training their
dog using positive training methods to first ensure the
dog has a solid understanding of the command being asked before using any harsh
corrections would have a positive effect on their
dog's aggression issues.
Continue bringing the cat closer, a few feet at a time, repeating the
corrections as needed and making sure to praise the
dog when he sits quietly and ignores the cat.
Punishments such
as leash jerks and collar
corrections, hitting, poking, «nudging,» kicking, hanging by the collar, or using electric shock or spray collars may be effective in suppressing behavior at that moment, but these tools and techniques do little to solve the problem in the long term and can make a
dog's behavior much worse in the future.
TIP: If you are working with a
dog that you are not sure of their past or if you are a so - called «balanced
dog trainer» (meaning a trainer who uses both, the clicker training principles
as well
as corrections), make sure that you are using a different verbal signal for withholding a reward than the signal that was used for
corrections.
Avoid trainers who recommend using physical force (e.g. alpha rolling, pushing a
dog into position, hitting, choke chain or pinch collar
correction) or methods / devices that have the potential for harm,
as an acceptable way to train.
The fact is that, if you make the
correction, the
dog will learn to respect you
as a fair leader; a leader that will dispense love, praise, and
correction in a fair manner.
You'll also need to be a lot more careful with your leash when walking your
dog as guiding it or giving it a
correction will take much less force when you're connected directly to the
dog's head.
On the other hand, in an emergency, such
as one where a
dog might be about to attack another
dog, an experienced
dog handler, with a trained
dog, might resort to a last resort
correction if verbal
corrections are failing.
