The canine cranial cruciate ligament is one of four ligaments that join the tibia and femur together to create a stable
dog knee joint (stifle joint).

With this surgery, the tibia is cut and rotated in such a way that the natural weight bearing of the
dog actually stabilizes the
knee joint.
Traditionally, injuries of this nature have been remedied using a procedure in which the damaged ligament is removed and a large, strong suture replaces it to tighten the
joint and provide stability until the
dog's own healed tissue is able to hold the
knee in place.
Despite being a generally healthy breed, some
dogs may experience skin allergies, patellar luxation (
knee joint problems), and diabetes mellitus.

ACL Surgery on your
dog may be recommended if your
dog is in pain or does not have use of its
knee joint.
Otherwise referred to as a «trick
knee», it describes a situation in which your
dog's
knee, the visible
joint on the front part of the hind leg, slips out of its socket.
Your
dog's
knee joint is the largest
joint in her body and carries most of her body weight.
While your
dog is under anesthesia a small incision is made above the
knee and a tiny camera is pushed into the
joint to look at the damage.
Like the human
knee, canine
knee joints are meant to bend in only one direction, and when any parts of the

In this condition, known as polyarthritis,
dogs present with lameness in many different
joints but typically the wrist, hock,

dog knee brace) creates a biomechanical support that stabilizes the rear leg by mechanically coupling the femur and tibia together through the hinges placed across the stifle
joint.
This cranial (forward) thrust of the tibia creates instability of the stifle /
knee joint, which can lead to your
dog limping.
But unlike humans,
dogs can also have chronic cruciate damage just from day - to - day wear and tear on their
knee joints simply because of the angle of your
dog's
knee (I've included numerous videos that show this so don't think that your
dog has a defective
knee joint, they are all built that way).
As mentioned above there is no definitive cause for a ruptured CrCl in your
dog but there are a number ofcontributing factors: obesity, inactivity with occasional strenuous activity, conformation (very straight legged
dogs, like pitbulls, put tremendous stress on their
knee joint), hormonal imbalances (possibly from early spay or neutering) and inflammatory conditions.
I say this because in larger breeds those
dogs can put enough stress on their
joint to snap the 80 lb test fishing line that is used to secure their
knee even after enough scare tissue has been grown to tighten the
joint.
Luxating patella is one of the most common
knee joint abnormalities of
dogs, but it is only occasionally seen in cats.

Like humans, a
dog may experience severe pressure on its
