Pets soon may be banned from city parks while vicious
dogs could be
muzzled and impounded if they display aggressive behavior, according to two newly proposed laws from the city's Animal Control Department.Vickie Ann Shook, department director, requested adoption of the
ordinances to give her officers better control over animals in the city.
Many of those
ordinances include substantial fines for owners who allow their
dogs to roam neighborhoods; strict requirements for housing
dogs in securely locked fences if they have ever charged people or approached them in a menacing way; liability insurance for owners of
dogs that have been deemed vicious; and requirements for leashes and
muzzles for vicious
dogs taken outside secured areas.
DELAND — The Volusia County Council
muzzled a proposed amendment to the county's bad -
dog ordinance Thursday after agreeing with two council members who said they needed more information and additional time to review the 23 - page document.
