Sterilization surgery is
often cited as the demarcation between «responsible» and «irresponsible»
dog ownership, but that is a political and moral judgment, not a practical one.
They are very
often owners that have proven to practice
dog ownership with a lack of accountability and responsibility.
My study of
dog bite - related fatalities occurring over the past five decades has identified the poor
ownership / management practices involved in the overwhelming majority of these incidents: owners obtaining
dogs, and maintaining them as resident
dogs outside of regular, positive human interaction,
often for negative functions (i.e. guarding / protection, fighting, intimidation / status); owners failing to humanely contain, control and maintain their
dogs (chained
dogs, loose roaming
dogs, cases of abuse / neglect); owners failing to knowledgably supervise interaction between children and
dogs; and owners failing to spay or neuter
dogs not used for competition, show, or in a responsible breeding program.
Dog dental health is an important but
often overlooked aspect of pet
ownership.
With promoting microchipping, their Charitable Trust, «Open for
Dogs» campaign highlighting
dog - friendly hotels, restaurants and pubs and
dog / human fitness and training campaigns too, the Kennel Club are doing so much to promote both canine heath and responsible pet
ownership in this country, but all that good stuff is
often overlooked.

often overlooked part of
dog ownership.

In addition to raising funds, Aubrey wanted people to learn that
often misunderstood, stereotyped, and targeted for
dog fighting, pit bulls are prevalent in local shelters due to irresponsible breeding and
ownership.
While
often these conversations happen in the context of
dog bite incidents and aggressive behavior, it should be noted that this is also an issue for small
dogs and that as a whole, we need to put greater emphasis on teaching responsible
dog ownership — regardless of what type of
dog people choose to have.

often have to invest much more of themselves in to
dog ownership.
