The biggest thing I learned from this extremely challenging experience is that in most cases it is not dog's or owner's fault, but the problem lies in lack of proper information and understanding of this breed — and unfortunately majority of
dog training guides do not address these small - small things that are very important for responsible pet ownership.

You will never have 100 % obedience (
dogs aren't machines, otherwise competitors would always get top score in obedience trials, police
dogs and
guide dogs would always obey, etc... and the truth is that even top
trained dogs make mistakes and sometimes don't obey).

train Guide Dogs for people who are blind, for seizure or diabetic alert / response, to anticipate or detect medical symptoms, for the primary benefits of emotional comfort, to recognize and / or manage undesirable human behavior, to provide supervision, navigation, or safety from environmental hazards, to respond aggressively, to provide personal protection or to assist with the management of mental illness (such as PTSD, etc.) as a primary condition.
But it
does mean that your pet isn't granted the same status as, say, a
dog trained to move its handler into a safe position during a seizure or a miniature horse
trained to
guide its blind handler around busy city streets.
Companion
dogs and
guide dogs are some of the most elite activity
trained dogs in the class, but any
dog can be taught to
do something useful if an owner chooses.
That said, I
do understand the concern that
dogs being
trained as Service
dogs, especially
guide dogs, need to have every card stacked in their favor and that includes being purpose bred and
training from day one.
