As people from coast to coast celebrate the unofficial start of summer this Memorial Day weekend,
dogs in animal
shelters across America are hoping that the beginning of a new season will bring with it the start of a new life
in a forever home.
The 500
dogs expected to march from Manhattan to Brooklyn Saturday night are taking part
in the second Brooklyn Bridge Pup Crawl — a parade that raises funds for animal
shelters and rescues
across the country.
Yet even with the explosion of trafficking
in stolen
dogs and the shipments of hundreds of thousands of foreign
dogs, many
shelters and rescues
across America are still empty.
It is common, everyday practice to have to kill
dogs and cats
in an over crowded
shelter to make room for incoming animals.Meanwhile
in another
shelter across town or
across state borders, there are no
dogs available for adoption.
Each year an estimated 3.9 million
