Fortunately, most of the time
dogs with chronic
pancreatitis problems
do not die from the attacks.
For almost my entire career in veterinary medicine the standard feeding advice for
dogs with pancreatitis was simply to avoid feeding them while there were clinical signs of acute
pancreatitis present, even if they didn't eat for a week or more.
Why
do some
dogs come down
with pancreatitis?
There are some reports of
pancreatitis or gastrointestinal disturbances in
dogs being supplemented
with fish oils but this doesn't seem like a common problem.
Substantially elevated (three to five times the normal level), lipase and amylase offer strong support for a diagnosis of
pancreatitis, but the absence of these signs
does not rule it out; lipase and amylase may be normal in as many as half of all
dogs with pancreatitis.

Medium - chain triglycerides (MCTs) are a form of fat that
does not require pancreatic enzymes for digestion, so it is well tolerated by
dogs with pancreatitis, EPI, and other forms of malabsorption.
They need to lose about 90 % of their pancreas to
do this so many
dogs live
with pancreatitis for their whole lives without developing these problems.
It is important to note that diabetes and EPI
do NOT occur in many
dogs with pancreatitis — the
dog has to destroy 90 % of its pancreas to develop these, which usually takes many years as described below.
Some
dogs with relatively mild
pancreatitis, which
does not last long, have very high amylase levels.
 However, you find in this article that
dogs that present
with pancreatitis do have a couple of things in common.

dog to pig out on chocolate or leftover pizza, chicken or turkey — anything
with a high percentage of fat can lead to
pancreatitis (inflammation and swelling of the pancreas, which can cause permanent damage and be fatal),» says Martha Gearhart, DVM, owner of Pleasant Valley Animal Hospital, Pleasant Valley, N.Y. «Raw bones are digestible, but their sharp points are dangerous, and cooked bones are very brittle and can shatter [once eaten].»
Dogs with history of conditions such as bladder stones or
pancreatitis may not
do well
with added people food.
Cats, even
with severe
pancreatitis, present
with less specific clinical signs than
do dogs.
My
dog was diagnosed
with chronic
pancreatitis when he was a year old, and even the prescription
dog food
did not control his pancreatic levels like your food
does.
The
dog should be checked for diseases like Hip Dysplasia, Allergy,
Pancreatitis, Cryptorchidism, etc. all the necessary actions like medical tests should be
done promptly along
with additional dosage of love and personal care.
Most cases of
pancreatitis will resolve
with treatment, but there are some cases that develop severe complications or have such severe
pancreatitis that
dogs do not recover.
