I just redid my kitchen and
did the subway tile in a herringbone pattern.
I love the idea of keeping the black stripe around the room too, but if they're not fond of it they could just
do subway tile all the way up the walls.
We've been re-doing our kid's bathroom and

do the subway tile in your kitchen, I would use brown colors to match with your counter tops.

It is amazing how much bigger and brighter my kitchen looks, even without painting any of the cabinets (or adding my beloved
subway tile... sigh, someday — I still have a big box of it so don't be surprised if I get inspired late one night to try

The previous owners of our house renovated the kitchen before and they
did a nice job but the cabinets are dark wood... they are actually pretty nice, they have a glaze and everything, but all I want to
do is paint them and change the little
tiled backsplash to a handmade

What I
did was, cleaning it down thoroughly and cladding the walls around and in the back with some marble
subway backsplash
tiles.
She is now
doing soft gray cabinets and white glass
subway tile for the backsplash.
My sister has white
subway in her kitchen and bathrooms with a dark grey grout and I love it so much that I just
did the same in our new addition — in fact, I'm going to dig out the grout in the upstairs bathroom (which is white grout on white
subway tile) and
do a silvery / grey grout in its place.

I also don't understand why you would want to
do darker with the cabinetry in the kitchen if you are

subway tile... it would make one or the other or both look dirty.

did some «budget - friendly» renovating of my kitchen 2 yrs ago, stripping old wallpaper, putting in the
subway tile backsplash, adding bright white beadboard halfway up walls and on the existing white cabinet ends, painting the rest of the walls soft white (sometimes looks very very pale yellow).

subway tiles remain on trend (if you just installed them, don't worry: they'll look great for years to come), if you're designing from scratch this year, consider taking a pass on that trend and trying something newer, something edgier, something eminently funkier — but versatile and sophisticated too.
