I was planning on
doing a water birth in the birthing tub, but as you'll see in part 2 of this series, my baby girl was on a different timetable.
They basically put out a statement saying, «We're no longer
doing water birth.»
The risk of not
doing a water birth, is that you don't get to brag about
doing a water birth.
I made an appointment with my general practitioner who I've come to trust although I planned on
doing water birth with a midwife.
Our community midwives agreed to come to our house and to
do a water birth.
Does water birth increase the risk of neonatal infection?

What
does a water birth look like?
Delivery As this hospital doesn't
do water births and I had no intention of having one, it was a long walk back to the bed for me.
In fact, I was the first doctor to
do a water birth in a London hospital in the eighties.
But many people don't really understand exactly what a doula's job is; I've had a few people ask me if doulas just
do water births at home.
Not exact matches
Yeah, they probably don't even believe in other stuff like talking snakes, a young earth, walking on
water, virgin
birth, and all that other everyday stuff that wacked - out Christians believe...
If you look deeply into ANY religion you will see that it doesn't make any logical sense, like talking burning bushes and virgin
birth and dead people coming back to life in three days and parting seas with the wave of a hand or walking on
water or poison won't kill you and neither will a copperhead.
The Bible speaks of a God who
does «new» things, which are «marvelous in our sight»: the barren women conceives and gives
birth,
water springs from the rock, five pieces of bread and two fishes feed a multitude, the world is created from nothing and Jesus is raised from the dead.
The saga continued with a letter to Link on 5 July: «I congratulate you on the
birth of your daughter Margaret... I looked forward to this with great eagerness so that you too might experience «the natural» affection of parents for their children... If you want a
water birth and
do not have an appropriately sized tub in your home, you will have to rent or buy a birthing pool.

When you're
doing an intense physical activity like giving
birth, your body needs lots of
water and food, so I was really glad to be somewhere — home — where I didn't have to fight any outdated protocols in order to eat and drink.

birth videos, used natural techniques to get baby into optimum position, created special birthing space.
Well in my book
water birth is below the standard of care anyway so it's always negligent, you just don't always have injuries.
Of course I
do wonder if many of these
water birth lovers break the rules and keep it warmer with everyone saying how amazing it is.
Just saw a post on the Mayo Clinic website written by CNM / RN who said among other things «
water birth doesn't increase the risk of infection» and she talks about the dive reflex.
Again,
water birth is as
water birth does, and so many woo mothers risk their babies life's needlessly.
For your next delivery why don't you try an unassisted
water, lotus
birth at home and tells us how it works out?!
The hospital birthing center where I had my baby offers it... My midwife was actually excited that I wanted to
do water labor but no
water birth... I was the only one of her patients who
DID N'T intend to
birth in the
water and she needed people birthing out of the tub for a control group in a waterbirth infection study she was contributing to.
By the way,
did you notice that the published title reads «Review of 1600
water births.
My
birth was nothing like I had hoped, labored in bed on my back because they couldn't monitor the babies if I moved, had to have pitocin and later an epidural (I could stand the pitocin, it was the fact that no one
does a breach delivery any more that, just in case Twin B didn't turn after Twin A was born), puking in the operating room because I couldn't even have a single drop of
water on my tongue while laboring strapped down (talk about understanding what hell is like!)
Most moms
do what «sbest for their kids.And yes, there are women out there who legitimately can not bf, so formula is a WONDERFUL choice for them.I exclusively bf both of mine, but think it's okay to ff if you don't have enough milk.there are other situations where i think it's selfish.As for drugs during pregnancy and
birth, I had to take 3 doses of medication while pregnant so that I could eat.my morning sickness was so bad I couldn't even keep
water down.I made the choice to
do that so I didn't starve my unborn child, but I only took what was neccessary to keep something down, and then had no other drugs and plan not to until my son is
done bf.And as for the «natural» baby, carcinogens are EVERYWHERE, even in your organic food.in this industrialized world you can not get away from them, and to attack other moms for their choices is a sad statement of your morality and on how your child's persoality is going to turn out.also, having multiple kids is definately more demanding than one.
If for some reason the labour
does not go according to plan you may have to get out of the
water and give
birth normally; this can be disruptive and it may cause concern and confusion.
I am a proponent of «Gentle
Birth» philosophy and will support your baby being born in
water and «received» (I
do not use the words «deliver» or «catch») with assistance from you, your partner or friend / family member.
Right after
birth you will quickly drop a few pounds from excess
water and more weight loss will happen when your blood circulation goes back to normal and so
does your uterus size.
And if you
do decide on a
water birth, you don't have to take «no» for an answer from your care provider.
If you're planning to have a
water birth as I am, you'll need a birthing tub (if your midwife
does not provide) and a new hose to fill the tub up with.
In addition, as
water births are usually «natural»
births, meaning
done without pain medication, many women choose this method because it feels more natural.
Doing your research on the various types of pain relief and facilities offered by your hospital is also really important (there's no point in writing that you want a
water birth if the hospital you will be using has no tub or
birth pool on offer!).
I didn't get the
water birth as planned but it turned out just beautifully.
Her «Help» when I came home from hospital was to take the baby and give it
water during the night, which was something i would never have
done during later
births, where I was one of the people in the maternity ward who always asked to be woken if baby cried!
(It was later determined that I must have picked up an infection because my
water broke around midnight and I didn't give
birth until just after 3 p.m.) I didn't feel well for a few days and was on an anti-biotic when we were discharged.
Safety is of utmost concern at Manzanita Midwifery, and
water birth does not increase maternal or newborn infection rates or perineal tearing compared to birthing outside of
water.
I don't plan on having any more children, but if I
did, it would no doubt be another
water birth with Andaluz

Preparing -
do a trial run: The top tip when it came to
water birth was to
do a trial run with inflating and filling your pool in advance.
There is little risk of drowning with a
water birth because breathing doesn't begin until the baby is exposed to air.
In our study, over half the women who gave
birth at home
did so in
water.
If you
do give
birth in
water, be sure to have lots of towels on hand for both you and your new baby to keep you both warm.
