If you're new to the «travel rewards» world, booking cheap
domestic award flights might be your way of getting your feet wet before you book an international
award flight or a first class flight that will require
more miles.
Here's how you can earn miles, attain elite status, and book
award flights on
more than a dozen
domestic and foreign frequent - flier programs — each of which has at least one major U.S. partner.
Though American charges a late booking fee and relatively hefty change fees, it has pretty reliable availability booking in advance or close - in (except for big holiday seasons like Christmas) and incredibly low off - peak

award flights — particularly when partners are priced much higher than the
domestic carrier — I've been focusing on earning
more miles with foreign airline loyalty programs.
Short,
domestic flights will still be well - priced, but premium long - haul
award tickets will get
more expensive.
Thanks to my elite status, I can make changes with no fee, and I am much
more likely to require changes to international than to
domestic awards.
Alaska recently overhauled its
award chart for
domestic economy travel on its own metal, and in a rare win for travelers, actually made the chart
more valuable.
You can also transfer points between accounts for the purpose of booking an
award, so it's entirely possible for your spouse or
domestic partner to buy
more points if that isn't enough.
Assuming the holiday rush cuts down on available
award seats on United, you're likely to get pushed to a higher tier with your United miles, which could mean spending 40,000 miles or
more on a
domestic fare instead of 25,000.
One way
awards start at 4,500 Avios for flights outside the U.S. and 7,500 Avios for those originating or terminating in the U.S. Even with the slightly
more expensive price for U.S. short haul
awards, they are still cheaper than

award space for their points in the last few months.

More basics are laid out in this post, but the key things to keep in mind are that you can only have two stopovers and two open jaws on round - trip
awards, that you can score deals like 30,000 - mile economy
awards between select cities in the US and Europe, and that its
award chart is not the best deal overall, but there are some interesting redemptions like North America to Hawaii for 40,000 miles round - trip in economy,
domestic business - and first - class
awards for 35,000 / 50,000 miles respectively, and business class to Central and Southeast Asia as well as Australia / New Zealand for 135,000 miles.
Someone redeeming for U.S.
