Rising
domestic oil
production and a global energy glut have all but nullified the pitch that
ethanol would help wean the country off foreign oil.
Fittingly, President Obama today was at Georgetown University, where he outlined a broad initiative to cut oil imports, boost
domestic production of oil and gas, and increase the use of cellulosic
ethanol and natural gas to power vehicles.
(Sec. 1514) Directs the EPA Administrator to: (1) establish an Advanced Biofuel Technologies Program to demonstrate advanced technologies for the
production of alternative transportation fuels; (2) give priority to projects that enhance the geographical diversity of alternative fuels
production and utilize feedstocks that represent 10 % or less of
domestic ethanol or biodiesel fuel
production during the previous fiscal year; and (3) fund demonstration projects to develop conversion technologies for producing cellulosic biomass
ethanol, and for coproducing value - added bioproducts (such as fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides) resulting from biodiesel fuel
production.
Unfortunately, President Obama is following President Carter by seeking approval from the environmental movement by thwarting
domestic fossil fuel
production and promoting unreliable, uneconomic renewable energy sources of solar, wind,
ethanol from corn, and other biofuels.

Ethanol production requires significant energy, and current U.S.
production derives most of that energy from
domestic coal, natural gas and other non-oil sources.
One rationale for
ethanol production in the U.S. is increased energy security, from shifting supply from oil imports to
domestic sources.
Which brings me to another advantage —
domestic production of
ethanol resulted in over 220 million FEWER barrels of oil imported into this country, saving over $ 16 billion going to foreign countries.
