In the first couple of weeks, some folks find that sleeping in close enough proximity to have your fingers inside the crate
door as your pup settles to sleep helps more nervous puppies.

Each size is available in single - and double -
door options, and they all come with a divider that allows you to adjust the size of the crate
as your
pup grows.
This can be done for medical reasons, such
as damage from frostbite or fracture if the
pup's tail gets shut in the
door.
If
pup continues to bark, open the
door (don't let him out) and apply pressure to his mouth
as you command QUIET.
If your
pup whines
as soon
as you close the
door, do not open it immediately.

pup and your resident pets should have no direct contact, not even sniffing through the screen or beneath the
door,
as even this risks disease transmission.
Stuff your puppy's first meal into a hollow chewtoy (see Chewing), tie the chewtoy inside the crate, and leave the
door open so the
pup may come and go
as he pleases.

as they open
doors, answer questions with paw motions, and bring you the morning paper?
Watch for signs that your
pup or new dog has to go outside, such
as sniffing the floor, pacing, whimpering, staring at you, looking restless, slinking behind a couch, or walking to a
door, and immediately take him out.
