Oreo's notification badges pick a color for their badges from the
icon that it'll be sitting on top of,
which means that most of the time, these
dots blend into the
icon rather than standing out and reminding you to check your notifications.
An
Icon Badge option now appears in the home screen settings,
which enables app notification
dots (although these only seem to appear in a single color right now).

App Shortcuts and Notification
Dots can now be set to match the color of your wallpaper or app
icon,

Instead of the previous symbol,
which is two oblong rectangles sandwiching a square over a blue circle, the new
icon takes the shape of an abstract «W.» It's crafted out of two slashes and two
dots, all in the typical Google blue, yellow, green and red colours.
On top of that, you'll get the new notification
dots,
which shows
which apps have notifications from the app
icons.
The user - side Oreo changes include notification
dots on
icons which are displaying notifications,
which also adds a shortcut via long - press to view those notifications.
The
dot's color is selected automatically, extracted from the
icon of the app on
which it's resting.
