doubt about the compatibility of our law of self - defence with Art 2 (right to life) of the European Convention on Human Rights, which anticipates that any mistakes made by agents of the state should be based on reasonable grounds (see Caraher v United Kingdom (Application 24520 / 94) and 157 NLJ 7261, pp 286 — 87).
