When the
measure, known as Proposition 42, was approved
on a second ballot (after having been
voted down only a day earlier), it touched off a fire storm of criticism, mostly from coaches who stand to lose the services of youngsters whose academic prowess has not kept pace with their athletic skills.
Prior to the November election, Cary Park District officials promised residents that if they
voted down referendum
measures seeking to fund a proposed swim center and ballfields
on 80 acres near Cary - Grove High School, they'd drop a condemnation suit for the land.
The
measure would presumably end arguments over whether a certain bill would pass in an up - or -
down vote in the chamber, but is being bottled up
on the legislative calender by the chamber's majority party leadership.
Senate Democrats once again addressed this issue head -
on with proposals to protect our communities from gun violence, and again the Senate Republicans
voted these
measures down.»
Not receiving up or
down votes on key
measures has been a perennial concern for lawmakers in the minority of either chamber.
On Monday, the state Senate
voted down the
measure, which would allow children of undocumented immigrants to be eligible for college financial aid.
Assembly Republicans called
on Tuesday for a
vote on a constitutional amendment that would strip pension benefits from state officials convicted of corruption and called an alternative
measure working its way through the chamber a «watered -
down»
measure.
The
measure voted down by a largely party line
vote on April 11th would have been the first step toward forcing a
vote on the property tax cap in the Assembly.
Updegrove sounded an optimistic note that recent political changes in Albany provided an opportunity for the
measures to at least receive a fair up - or -
down vote on the floor of the Assembly, where former Speaker Sheldon Silver, D - Manhattan, had previously blocked Medicaid reform
votes from ever even coming to a
vote.
Almost a week after 17 students and teachers were gunned
