Nearly 1/3 of Advantage ForbesBooks Authors arrive at our front door
with the first
draft of a
manuscript already created.
(I mentioned earlier up, but the
manuscript is no longer
with me so I cobbled this together from the original
draft, hence the spottiness!)
The authors» responsibilities were as follows — PM: conceived the Blue Mountiains Eye Study and obtained the funding; AEB and ME: conceived the present project; PM, ER, ME, and AWB: collected the data; AEB: conducted the analysis and
drafted the
manuscript; ER: provided support
with the statistical analysis; and AEB, VF, JBM, and PM: supervised the study.
I've worked
with clients that have finished a
draft, only to get overwhelmed trying to turn their rough
manuscript into a polished, publishable novel.
The

If you start working
with an author on the first
draft, generally how long does it take for you and the author to reach the final
manuscript stage?
If an editor is given a first
draft and asked turn it into a structurally sound, grammatically clean, marketable
manuscript, there are many more stages for her to go through to get to the end product than if she starts
with a third or fourth
draft.
With feedback from my agent, I worked up another, longer
draft of the
manuscript, and this was the one we submitted to publishers worldwide, selling first in Australia, then around the world.
