Artist Statement «This is a combination of one of my photos, a shape I
drew and a public domain image
with the
wolf cut out and placed in my photo.
While Pollock's
drawing is more rough - hewn than de Kooning's, his work never stopped grappling
with form, nor did it lose the graphic edge that we see in his most famous early painting, «The She -
Wolf» of 1943.
Before the mural, Pollock had painted some interesting and individual works such as The She -
Wolf (1943, Museum of Modern Art, New York) and The Guardians of the Secret (1943, San Francisco Museum) but the very titles of these hint at their fundamental reliance on Surrealism,
with its intentions and associations
drawn from the unconscious.
