After the first coat dried, I applied a second coat of black paint to my dresser and
drawer fronts because it needed it for coverage purposes.
(I did have to apply about 3 coats to the cane
drawer fronts because of all the little grooves.)
Not exact matches
Even though the finish was is rough shape, I was immediately drawn to it
because of the pretty scrollwork on the
front and also
because of the unique design of the
drawer pulls.
If you are wondering why I don't paint right to the edge it is
because when the
drawers are closed you will see the yellow (just a little) and that would annoy me so I always leave the lip either unpainted in this case or whatever colour I painted the
drawer fronts.
The first thing we did was assemble the dresser leaving off the
drawer fronts to the
drawers because in order to give the dresser an apothecary cabinet look, the
drawer fronts needed a slight modification.
That's
because when cabinets are refaced, you save the «bones» of the cabinets and only replace the door
fronts and
drawers for a complete transformation.
Because I didn't want everything to be matchy in his room - I really just tried some things out on these and finally settled on a warm stain on the
drawer fronts and Annie Sloan Pure White on the sides and base.
Less legs = less floor space, and it's visually lighter
because it's not a solid piece with
drawers all the way down the
front of it.
I painted out the
front panel on the
drawers in a cream
because my next step after finishing the harlequin pattern was to add a pretty landscape of one of our beautiful NY Finger Lakes.
They are a HEWUUUUGE pain to reinstall and totally not worth the effort
because THEY ARE FALSE
DRAWER FRONTS.

because we are attaching a shaker style frame on the
front of the
drawers to match the armoire, see below) Once the face frame was up we filled in the gaps on the side to create a shaker style panel, especially on the two sides.
Drill pocket holes for 1/2 ″ material on the outside
front of the
drawer sides (remember the
front of your
drawer is only about 3/8 ″ -1 / 2 ″ thick
because of the decorative cuts).
