His interest ranges from folk embroidery,
made on vintage fabrics taken from his mother's chest, to natural history studies and specimens under glass; from
drawings, seemingly childish and clumsy and
made in response to familiar situations to elements of Russian culture, scattered around the exhibition
space and combined with memories of the local context.
The
drawings are
made in pencil on a super-black material, developed for use
in space optics, which absorbs 99.96 % light.
In this way, her
drawing machines explore the dialectic between technology and labor,
making us conscious of our place, and that of others, within the gallery
space.
Working with a wire armature and an oxyacetylene torch to
make sculpture that seemed to accumulate as a series of molten marks and linear strands, Mr. Lassaw took the idea of
drawing in space quite literally.
Between showings of the film the darkened
space of The Boiler will come to life with projections and illuminations relating to the animation, including isometric glow -
in - the - dark tape
drawings on bubble wrap and a hanging sculpture
made of 500 four - inch foam rubber cubes, which will slowly become visible.
Appended with straight or curved elements
in contrasting colors, they confirm that he not only
made «
drawings»
in space, but that he also
made virtually shaped paintings, and with exuberant results.
His ongoing series «
Drawing in Space» comprises works
made from protest wire - a tangled, black mass of wire salvaged from car tyres burnt during the civil unrest that accompanied the last elections
in Kenya.
