The same people created a system
of writing, developed a calendar, and
drew charts
of the
night sky while Europe plunged into the Dark Ages.
 Participating families added a dedicated bedroom to their adobe and stone house compounds. These simple rooms include two beds with mattresses made
of totora reed harvested from the lake;  woolen blankets, and homespun cotton sheets. Dinner and breakfast may be provided by the family, or visitors may eat in the village.  Water is provided in ceramic jugs
drawn from a well. Visitors use outhouses located adjacent to the house compound.  The views to the star - filled
sky at
night, and to the 20,000 - foot peaks
of the Royal Range add to the experience
of peace and tranquility.
Artist Bio: From Austin, Texas, Colleen Blackard is based in Brooklyn, NY and creates
drawings inspired by the light
of the Texas
night skies of her youth.
For more than four decades, Vija Celmin (Vee - ya Sell - min) has worked late into the
night obsessively
drawing and painting her most beloved subjects, the dark
sky, the surfaces
of the ocean, the moon, and the desert, without horizon or perspective.
Celmins» densely layered
drawings and prints engage with the natural world, from the surface
of the ocean to expanses
of desert, spider's webs to
night skies.
Inspired in part by the artist's relocation from Houston to southern California two years ago,
drawings such as California and Palm Tree /
Night Walk depict curious palms and redwoods looming large against wide expanses
of flat
skies.
In 1994 she returned to
drawing with a series
of night skies but instead
of graphite her materials were now charcoal and eraser.
Born in Latvia in 1938, Vija Celmins is best known for her intricate, monochromatic
drawings of a select range
of subjects; meticulous renderings
of the surface
of the ocean, the vastness
of the
night sky or the microscopic detail
of a spider's web.
After producing a body
of paintings and
drawings in the 1960s
of electrical household appliances and newspaper clippings, often about violent subjects, she came to devote her work to the minutely crafted images
of «landscape» subjects: the
night sky, the desert, and the ocean.
Her early object paintings and interest in scientific imagery led to her
drawings and prints
of seas,
night skies and deserts, with their extraordinary surfaces and physical presence.
The juxtaposition
of the images creates a dialogue between the
night sky and another kind
of spatial exploration on the picture plane, such as an engineer's
drawing of a ship or a desert floor.
Influenced by the fact that the North Star — though it is a fixed point in the
night sky — changes over the course
of several thousands
of years (and will be replaced as time goes on) Ferrandi's sculpture and
drawings serve to ritualize its phenomenon.
The gallery in The Domestic Arts building will further explore Zimmerman's works on paper, juxtaposing recent photographic collages
of the
night sky with pastel
drawings of clouds.
Throughout her career, Celmins has painted or
drawn a selective repertoire
of images: airplanes, the
night sky, oceans, deserts, spider webs, and the surface
of the moon.
