His is a charcoal
on paper drawing that
measures approximately 4 feet square, a simple mandala.
In As If, his second exhibition at the same gallery, he shows
drawings for the first time — thirty works
on clay - coated
paper measuring 5 1/2 x 7 inches.
David's process of conceiving an image is rooted in the line and he retains the impulsive and ephemeral nature of
drawing as he transitions from sketches
on paper to painting, sculpture, and other media often reverting to
drawing — in ways that he refers to as «following instructions in order to formalize the feeling of bodily presence and absence, assembling and dissolving in equal
measures.»
The fifty - seven works in the exhibition can be divided more or less equally into three related groups: eighteen oil paintings done
on linen, all
measuring 22 x 28 inches; nineteen oils done
on paper, all
measuring 22 x 30 inches; twenty
drawings on paper, most of which
measure around 11 x 14 inches, and done in a wide range of materials, including gouache, colored pencil, crayon, ink, and graphite.
From 1965 onwards Judd favoured this yellow
paper for his
drawings, using either the format
on which T04936 was
drawn or a smaller format
measuring 216 × 280 mm (8 1/2 × 11 in).
I've been
measuring,
drawing, rearranging furniture (
on paper), picking paint colors... but nothing has been moved or done in real life yet.
