I actually used
dried cherries when I realized I didn't have any raisins, and think that dark chocolate would be pretty darn good in these next time, too.
Not exact matches
I don't always add
dried fruit but
when I do I prefer something with a bit of tartness, such as cranberries or sour
cherries.
It was easy to get the
dried cherries into tiny bits
when processed with the flour in my small coffee / spice mill.
Almonds and
dried fruit:
When you're in a hurry, put 1/4 cup of almonds in a bag with two tablespoons of
dried fruit, like

And although I have used candied lemon and orange peel you can vary this recipe by using other candied fruits or even
dried fruits (cranberries,
cherries, apricots to name a few) especially if you want to make this cake off season
when candied fruits are difficult to find.
