The threats of climate change and ocean acidification loom increasingly ominously for the future, but local stressors including an explosion in tourism, overfishing, and the resulting increase in macroalgae have been the major drivers of the catastrophic decline of Caribbean corals up until today.

Although the primary driver of glacial — interglacial cycles lies in the seasonal and latitudinal distribution of incoming solar energy driven by changes in the geometry of the Earth's orbit around the Sun («orbital forcing»), reconstructions and simulations together show that the full magnitude of glacial — interglacial temperature and ice volume changes can not be explained without accounting for changes in atmospheric CO2 content and the associated climate feedbacks.

All of the models ca 2007 that the IPCC used to forecast climate change predicted a steady increase in temperature (based, as they were, on the assumption that CO2 is the primary driver of temperature) and yet global temperatures have remained essentially flat since then.

The Anthropocene is the new epoch in which humanity, through its technological prowess and population of 7 billion, has become the major driver of changes of the Earth's physical systems, including the climate, the carbon cycle, the water cycle, the nitrogen cycle, and biodiversity.

By only speaking of climate change, this statement leaves out the biggest drivers of climate vulnerability on the continent in the next few decades, and contributes to the murkiness that will create ever more problems if and when rich countries finally divvy up money to help poor ones adapt to climate change.

According to the latest science, in most cases (outside of extreme heat waves) the connections between today's extreme weather events and human - driven climate change range from weak (hurricanes) to nil (tornadoes)-- and the dominant driver of losses in such events is fast - paced development or settlement in places with fundamental climatic or coastal vulnerability.

The new directive is the culmination of an extensive interagency review process undertaken in response to rapid changes taking place in the Arctic, the principal drivers of which are climate change, increasing human presence in the region, and the growing demand for Arctic energy deposits and other natural resources.
