Hertel and doctoral student Uris Baldos developed a combination
of economic models — one that captures the main
drivers of crop supply and demand and another that assesses
food security based on caloric consumption — to predict how global
food security from 2006 to 2050 could be affected by changes in population, income, bioenergy, agricultural productivity and climate.
The models show that climate change is a less influential
driver of global
food security than income, population and productivity — but it could still pose a significant risk to the nutrition levels
of people living in the world's poorest regions, Baldos said.
A person's identity is a composite picture
of one's ideas, beliefs, infinite longings, abstractions, glances in mirrors, personal relationships, size, height, weight and color; one's library card,
driver's license, social
security number, bank account, acquired names; one's occupying one space as opposed to another, one's wearing
of certain clothes as opposed to others, one's taste in
food, one's sex.
Conflict is also a major
driver of food insecurity and the ongoing violence in Afghanistan and DR Congo is largely responsible for the precarious
food security situation in both countries.
«There is simply no way governments can have credible REDD + strategies unless their top priority is to address agriculture and
food security - these are the main
drivers of forest destruction,» said Bruce Campbell
of the CGIAR.
