That could change as the European Environmental Agency, under the European Commission, recently recommended that all EU countries introduce
a drug classification system.
He believes that in a few years,
a drug classification system might be introduced to all 27 EU countries, especially Germany, which has already expressed interest.
The government has no plans to review
the drug classification system, despite new scientific claims it is «not fit for purpose».

MPs on the science and technology committee had called for the ABC
system of
classification to be scrapped, saying decisions on how to class
drugs such as cannabis and ecstasy were taken on a «disconcertingly ad hoc» basis.
It warns the government's use of the
classification system as a means of «sending out signals» to potential users is at odds with the stated objectives of classifying
drugs on the basis of harm.
But Home Office minister Vernon Coaker said that during meetings with policemen, victims of crime and
drug addicts over the past few months, «none of them have raised the
classification system as a concern that affects them with me».
At the conference, Åke Wennmalm of the consulting agency Sustainpharma in Stockholm presented part of a new, expanded
classification system that analyzes the environmental impacts of a
drug — where data are available — as it travels through manufacturing, disposal, and human waste.
