dugong populations that
feed on it.
The critically endangered hawksbill turtle, with its almond eyes, black spots and hooked beak, rests on the reefs
feeding on these sponges while the vulnerable
dugong, a flabby mammal with a wide snout and dolphin-esque tail, circles lagoons,
feeding on the reef's seagrasses.
A paddle along this very rich plant diversity will often discover turtles resting or
feeding, rays, mud crabs, fish, sea birds,
dugongs and sometimes the endangered Australian Humpback Dolphin.
Unusual mammals that can be seen include
dugongs, which
feed on the sea grass beds in the south of the park, and sperm whales, which travel through the area on their way to calve in the Sangihe Archipelago.
