I don't know of a cookbook that fits your description, but the «Idiots» and «Dummies» books have gotten me through raw cooking painlessly, so that's where I would look first, personally.

The one you would want would be the «Cooking for Dummies» book.

I have «Vegetarian Cooking for Dummies», and in addition to recipes, it has a whole section on how to cut things and, more importantly, how to grocery shop.

I'm not familiar with the «Cooking Basics for Dummies», but if they're available in the UK, you may want to take a look and see if it's helpful.

I was thinking of calling this recipe «Cheesecake for Dummies»....
