We did not find any evidence that the Baby Friendly intervention was associated with inequity
of benefit by maternal characteristics as suggested
elsewhere.35 Our findings suggest that implementation
of the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative in isolation is unlikely to be effective in extending the
duration of breastfeeding.
Previous studies, both in the UK and
elsewhere, highlight a clear link between socio - economic status and the initiation and
duration of breastfeeding (Bryant et al., 1992; Agnew et al., 1997; Foster, 1997); however, this paper does not support this view.
