Future high - resolution infrared observations from the James Webb Space Telescope will complement these discoveries by providing greater detail of the dynamics of cool stars, gas and dust
during galaxy collisions.
The likeliest mechanism is the arrival of a second massive black hole
during a galaxy collision, say Merritt and his colleague, radio astronomer Ron Ekers of the Australia Telescope National Facility in Sydney.

Yet the
collisions or near misses dictated by these theories are inherently very improbable, perhaps only ten for the entire life of our
galaxy during the past five billion years.32 With so few planets in existence, we could hardly assume that there would be much life elsewhere, at least not in our
galaxy.
These billion - solar - mass monsters, residing in the centers of large
galaxies, can glom together
during galactic
collisions after a spiraling dance, as shown here.
The Musket Ball Cluster's dark matter, the hot gas, and the individual
galaxies are strongly separated from each other because they behave differently
during a cluster
collision.
This spot is believed to be the nucleus of the former spiral
galaxy, which was ejected from the system
during the
collision and is now being shredded by tidal forces to produce the visible stellar stream.
Those other processes include
collisions of giant gas clouds within
galaxies, internal instabilities, tidal interactions
during flybys of smaller
galaxies, and minor mergers that don't produce conspicuous distortions.
An unusual object about 90 million light - years from Earth might be a supermassive black hole kicked out of its home
galaxy during a
collision with another
galaxy, a new study suggests.
Material stripped from the
galaxy during its
collision with a smaller
galaxy (seen in the upper left corner of the larger interaction partner) forms a long tidal tail.
The most accredited hypothesis to explain these abnormal cases invokes
collision and merging between two
galaxies: these outliers would therefore be nothing but
galaxies captured
during their
collision, a phenomenon that would lead to a sudden, though transient, increase in their star formation rate.
An unexpected attribute of these shells is the abundance of gas, which can become separated from smaller
galaxies during a
collision.
