This is the case
during natural warming cycles.

In a reconstruction of Pacific Ocean temperatures in the last 10,000 years, researchers have found that its middle depths have
warmed 15 times faster in the last 60 years than they did
during apparent
natural warming cycles in the previous 10,000.
This is rather plain evidence that
natural cycles have caused
warming before
during the Holocene and the same
natural factors may be at play right now too.
During that time
natural cycles like the Milankovitch
cycles, would trigger
warming releasing CO2 resulting in a positive feedback.
In no way can my summary of the research regarding the impact of regional climate change on the Viking civilization and Europe
during the Little Ice Age be used to «prove» the current global
warming is due to a
natural cycle.»
Furthermore most of the papers in their compilation only studied responses
during the
warm phases of
natural ocean
cycles beginning in the 70s, after most marine organisms had retreated south.
It's as if the contributions to global average temperature are roughly half and half between long
natural cycles and man - made global
warming, such that
during periods when the
natural cycles are
warming, we get quick, alarming
warming.
But then
during periods when those
natural cycles are cooling, it's enough to pretty much balance out the
warming from CO2.
If that is the cooling phase of a
natural cycle, and that
cycle was in a
warming phase
during the late 20th century, then about half the late 20th C
warming was
natural, and half due to AGW.
It seems for instance there is a 1 Kyear
natural cycle leading to RWP about 2 Kyears ago and a MWP about 1 Kyear ago... See for illustration Ljungqvist 2010 Actually Global
Warming observed
during 19th and 20th centuries is very likely corresponding to LIA recovery, i.e. from the cool period of this 1 Kyear
cycle.
except we've measured the deep ocean temperatures and found that those waters are holding the increased
warming during one of the
natural warming / cooling
cycles.
«About 60 % of the
warming observed from 1970 to 2000 was very likely caused by the above
natural 60 - year climatic
cycle during its
warming phase.»
The much bigger fact that stands out is that there was no significant cooling trend
during this time (when there should have been if we are in a
natural cycle) and that we continued to have
warmer years in 2005 and 2010 and soon to be 2014.
It also links the
cycles to a
natural 50 percent increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide
during the 10,000 year period leading up to the peak of all recurring 116,000 year mega global
warming cycles.
That's an interesting point, because some suspect that the mid-century surface «cooling» was due mainly to
natural cycles, but if that were the case, we would expect to see ocean
warming during that period.
