OK, first, what is «
dynamic award pricing?»
For
award flights on partners this
dynamic pricing wasn't a huge headache since partner
awards are subject to the lowest tier of the
dynamic pricing, so all you had to know is what the lowest redemption rate is for a route and that would tell you the mileage requirement for a partner
award.
Most hated to see the
award chart go (although Hilton already had a form of
dynamic pricing) but some of the changes like points pooling and the points + cash slider were welcomed by many Honors customers.
Many of their redemptions are very high, they don't publish an
award chart, and their
dynamic pricing makes searching for flights a huge headache sometimes.
It seems some routes are reflecting
dynamic pricing which means that the
award requirements are higher for flights closer to the departure date, so it looks like there's going to be even more ambiguity for the SkyMiles program.
My biggest complaint with them is that they they eliminated their
award chart in 2015 in favor of
dynamic pricing, which means
award prices fluctuate and that you're often left guessing and hoping for a certain redemption rate (that's probably on the higher side).
Since Delta employs
dynamic pricing for its
award tickets instead of actually publishing an
award chart, the cost of
award tickets can vary greatly.
Although Delta's
dynamic award pricing drives me crazy, they've got some decent redemptions here and there, especially considering how easy it is to accumulate Delta SkyMiles with different American Express co-branded cards.
A roundtrip in business / first on a domestic trip may run you 75,000 miles, although with Delta's
dynamic award pricing many
awards may be much higher.
Industry observers are predicting that other airlines are likely to follow the lead of Southwest and Delta in changing over to «
dynamic pricing» for
award trips — i.e., varying the miles or points required based on supply and demand, just as they do with air fares.
In other words, it looks like
dynamic pricing will replace the current
award charts.
I think it's only a matter of time before more and more programs offer some form of
dynamic pricing and it's one of the reasons I've aggressively sought out outsized value on business class and first class
awards because five years from now, those
awards might be much less obtainable.
This type of
dynamic pricing will mean more
awards available to the public since you'll be able to book any available seat (on Flying Blue airlines like KLM, Air France, etc.).
In some cases, Hilton explained, an
award night might even be cheaper with this
dynamic pricing model.
They will be moving to a
