Most
consumers express more interest
in reading
ebooks on ereaders over reading them on tablets,
in spite of the availability of tablet ereader apps.
There have been a slew of announcements of new
eBook - type devices this week at the CES (
Consumer Electronics Show)
in Las Vegas.
epub standard for
eBook source files is of major significance and will be critical
in the development of the
consumer eBook market.
This has resulted
in all publishers except the biggest being forced to put two prices on their
ebooks: a» digital
consumer retail» price (intended to be a selling price, for Apple, and lower) as well as a «list» price (intended for the retailer to discount, for Amazon, and higher).
The publishers said they will «use a formula based on the number of states participating and the number of
eBooks sold
in each state» to determine amounts due, but did not specify how
consumers will be reimbursed — by check, a discount on future purchases, or some other mechanism.
Libraries are the largest
consumer of books
in the country, but their relationship with
ebooks has been fraught.
In a letter to Hachette authors and agents, posted by CNN's Brian Stelter, Pietsch wrote that the company will get «full responsibility for the
consumer prices of our
ebooks,» and that «the percent of revenue on which Hachette authors»
ebook royalties are based will not decrease under this agreement.»
Ebooks were 5 percent of sales
in the first quarter of 2010 (Book Industry Study Group) but 9 percent of
consumer sales
in Fall 2010 (Association of American Publishers).
With print sales falling by 10 % last year, and book purchasing as a whole down 4 %,
ebook sales were reported to have grown, according to Nielsen's tracking of book purchases, up 20 %
in the UK
in 2013, with 80m
ebooks bought by UK
consumers, to a value of # 300m.
They don't see the used market
in their spreadsheets, just as they don't see growing indie
ebook sales there, so they have no idea how their decisions are playing out
in consumer behavior.
The trends
in other industries will affect
consumer expectations
in publishing — and
in small ways, it already has, with a movement geared to opening copyrighted works to the public, and the US Department of Justice suing all of the «big six» and Apple for price fixing (iBookstore prices differ widely from Amazon's), which will likely give Amazon the upper hand
in setting
ebook prices
in the long run.
The intensity of this reaction has died down to a quiet murmur since
consumers realized that they also like the convenience and affordability of
eBooks, but the continued presence of the
eBook vs. Print book debate has established one thing: print books, although decreasing significantly
in sales, aren't going to disappear
in the near future.
In the United States and Britain, sales of
eBooks represent between a quarter and a third of the
consumer book market.
According to the British PA,
consumer ebook sales rose 134 per cent
in 2012, reaching # 216million, with total digital sales up 66 per cent to # 411million (encompassing
ebooks, audiobooks downloads and online subscriptions).
While this report took into account the total book buying habits of
consumers,
ebooks also saw a spike
in consumption.
Take for instance the findings of Nielsen BookData compiled
in its latest report, Understanding the E-book
Consumer that has revealed a 9 % decline
in sales of
ebooks in May over the same period a month ago
in the UK.
The funds were appropriated by the General Assembly
in response to a report by the Department of
Consumer Protection which recommended,
in light of the high cost libraries pay for
eBooks, that the state develop its own
eBook Platform.
When the dust finally settled from the Department of Justice lawsuit against Apple and five of the then - Big Six publishers for illegally colluding to inflate the price of
ebooks, essentially bilking
consumers out of hundreds of millions of dollars
in an effort to grab some more market share away from Amazon, the terms of the judge's ruling included a caveat.
In a cryptically worded graphic on their website, a lot of unanswered questions were alluded to, particularly that the
ebooks parents have already purchased for their young readers as part of the platform «may soon no longer be available,» and that consumers «may be able to continue using your eBooks by making sure to open them on a bookshelf at least once by October 15.&

Just as
ebook distributors competed for readers by offering the best
in content, pricing, devices, and compatibility, digital magazine providers are also upping the ante when it comes to vying for
consumer loyalty.
In the US, more than 95 % of all
consumer ebook purchases — and probably closer to 99 % of them — go through just five major
ebook retailers.
Projects like Hugh Howey's Author Earnings are already maximizing on the available information to help authors make sound decisions concerning publishing route,
ebook pricing, and more, but traditional publishers are also slowly coming along
in terms of looking at all the possible pieces of information surrounding a book or author, and using that information to drive
consumer engagement.
In a victory for education across language barriers and distance, Amazon and the Brazilian Ministry of Education announced today that the Whispercast technology that makes
ebooks magically appear on
consumers» devices will now deliver textbooks to hundreds of thousands of teachers across Brazil.
PricewaterhouseCoopers estimates «
consumer eBooks will drive $ 8.2 billion
in sales by 2017, surpassing projected print book sales, which it thinks will shrink by more than half during that period.»
As
ebook subscription models continue to gain ground with
consumers, keeping a student - centric model
in motion through classrooms instead of only through private
consumer subscriptions seems to be the smarter approach.
Meanwhile over
in Asia, Japan led the
eBook markets with 15 % of the country's total
consumer book revenues; China and India, meanwhile, lagged far behind at 3 %.
News was announced yesterday from the lawyers for the plaintiffs
in one of Apple's side lawsuits over
ebook pricing that the grand total the company could have to pay out to
consumers is $ 400 million.

In 2012, the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) accused Apple and five publishers of
ebook price fixing, and since then, 33 states have sued Apple on behalf of their

No word on whether we'll be seeing
eBook readers from other companies turn up on the Appstore but
in the meantime,
consumers will have to resort to sideloading those apps on their Kindle Fire tablets if they wish to use them.
There's an insane amount of competition for
consumers» attention, and only the luckiest, most heavily promoted, and best
ebooks will sell
in large quantities (by large quantities I mean
in the hundreds or thousands; again a reason why publishers,
in my view, should not be spending a lot of money creating and distributing
ebooks if they expect a return on investment on most of their books).
I'm well aware that many downstream channels require DRM whether the publisher wants it or not, but from the
consumer perspective, what's important is how the
ebook is represented
in the greater marketplace.

Fans of print books, who have long lived
in fear that their neighborhood bookstore will be rendered obsolete by the ubiquity of
ebooks in a matter of years, can take comfort
in new numbers from Nielsen Books &
Consumer showing that
ebooks were outsold by both hardcovers and paperbacks
in the first half of 2014.
The boom
in ebook sales could very obviously be attributed to
consumers desire for digital content for their new devices.
That message is frankly tough to communicate to the direct market
in a way that reaches the
consumer level, whereas
in the
ebook channel, I wouldn't say it's easy, but you can actually have that communication.
But recent growth
in the foreign language
ebook catalogs of many major retailers has demonstrated an increased interest on the part of
consumers who want the portability, instant download access, and typically lower cost of digital editions.
One problem that Chen already foresees with his business model is preventing
consumers from paying a few cents for a bundle of
