ebook gives you the flexibility with your pricing you would never get with a
publishing house.
This last month I offered my new book, Successful
eBook Publishing, as a free
give - away during a 3 - day free promotion using Amazon KDP Select.
It's a numbers game: like it or not, independent
publishing already
gives almost half the
ebook unit sales of the market and seems unstoppable.
I can spend a lot of time quoting figures on
eBook and print sales (and analysing how efficacious they are,
given the erratic quality of
published numbers), but it isn't necessary for this discussion.
The three free
ebooks, explaining all of the
publishing / printing options available,
gave me detailed information (and pricing) for the options I was looking for.
We pay around $ 500 for all
eBooks we
publish, plus possible additional money from sales (our
eBooks are initially
given away for free), and new editions.
For what it's worth, I know several professional writers, one of whom is with a HUGE press and receives enviable publicity and support; a couple of whom are with small presses of varying quality; and many of whom are self -
published, hustling hard to sell a couple of books a month (or
giving their
ebooks away for free).
The trends in other industries will affect consumer expectations in
publishing — and in small ways, it already has, with a movement geared to opening copyrighted works to the public, and the US Department of Justice suing all of the «big six» and Apple for price fixing (iBookstore prices differ widely from Amazon's), which will likely
give Amazon the upper hand in setting
ebook prices in the long run.

gives the readers a deal when compared to most traditionally
published ebooks, and it's often considered a fair price by those who feel that digital books should cost less than the dead - tree variety since paper, ink, and shipping aren't a part of the equation.

eBook market this would seem like a retrogressive step by Amazon.

publishing puzzle, namely the ability for libraries to stock their work.
Not to be outdone, BooksOnBoard sent out a email today
giving people massive discounts on
ebooks published by HarperCollins.
In an even bolder move, Rowling
published the
ebooks through her own site only a few weeks ago and
gave several other online retail booksellers the take - it - or - leave - it deal of a lifetime: other retailers» customers can go to their favorite online book sites to purchase the books, which diverts them to Pottermore for the sale, then the original retailers will still send the
ebooks to the consumers» e-reader devices without requiring the downloading to a computer and transferring via cable that many customers have to rely on when purchasing books from sites other than the one that markets their e-readers.
While that price point may seem a little high for an unknown author — many self -
published authors keep their sales at $ 4.99 or less, with $ 2.99 being a fairly standard
ebook price for indie works —
given the argument that the cost of the book is in its initial creation, it makes sense.
At this point, every book
published should have an
ebook version, and it should be available in every
ebook store (If you only make it available at Amazon, or through iTunes, you have just
given people a reason to pirate).
I find it unlikely that the
publishing industry will introduce longer windows from printed book to
ebook because this
gives the pirated versions available on the internet more time to be distributed without there being a legitimate version for people to purchase.
With the incredible tools available through digital
publishing, the cost to purchase and
give away the
ebook for the individuals who fund raised could have been negligible compared to the cost of a print edition (note: unfortunately, the publisher has set the
ebook edition price of this title at $ 9.99, higher than the $ 8.52 per print copy that the protest organizers spent through Rediscovered Books).
We take great pride in producing beautiful books and
eBooks, and equip you with the tools and knowledge you need to
give your self -
published work the best possible chance to succeed.
However,
publishing a real dead - tree print book
gives you a level of credibility that no
ebook can match.
There's a standard set of practices to be followed by digital publishers and self -
publishing authors in making their
eBooks Mobi for the Amazon Kindle and ePub for Nook, iPad, etc and
given that the -LSB-...]
Due consideration must be
given to the increasing number of
ebooks that are only
published and distributed as an electronic edition.

In truth, the internet,
