eBooks from libraries as simple as possible.
They are a service when you download
the ebook from the library as part of your «subscription» to check the book out.

OverDrive, the leading supplier of
eBooks and audiobooks to
libraries and schools, announced that it has expanded into 50 different countries and just added 300,000 digital titles
from more than 100 top publishers such

We don't think of the publisher all that much until one of them withdraws their
ebooks from the
library market,
as Penguin did late last week.

from the public
library,

as they used Overdrive.
When the Big Six publishers pulled their

as I just found out.
The software between the two models is identical
as well, with one exception: the Kobo Aura One supports OverDrive directly so you can download
library ebooks for free
from public
libraries through the Kobo store.
The Sony PRS - T2 offers some features that the Kobo
ebook readers do not, such
as adding handwritten notes and markup, being able to download free
ebooks from the
library directly, physical buttons, and PDF support is much better.
This study highlights the continuing need to improve the
library eBook experience, not only
from apps but
from our catalogs, using APIs to provide
as few clicks and the most direct experience
from the
library's site
as possible, so that all our readers can get content
as easily
as possible.

While it is possible to construct perpetual license agreements that make provision for digital preservation and to develop communitywide preservation mechanisms (
as has been done with scholarly journals, where research
libraries are usually the dominant part of the marketplace), we are far away
from seeing such enabling terms and conditions in mass - market

from Amazon, we're not going to see anything like mass adoption so my concern is more future - looking.
Ebooks offer many new benefits to both
libraries and their patrons and it's reasonable to look at what value the new things bring, such
as instant access
from home, and how that should be shared.
It might seem counter-intuitive to the indie author desperate for sales to offer an
eBook as a free read, but the exposure you can get
from having your
eBook available for borrowing in a
library is immense.
