Publisher gets more of profit on
eBooks than hardcover.
American publishers are now bringing in more revenue from
ebooks than hardcover books, according to a report published by the Association of American Publishers (AAP).
In July 2010, Amazon — who was already the world's largest book retailer — reported that they sold more
ebooks than hardcovers during the second quarter of the year.
But I expect to pay less for
an ebook than a hardcover, and so do most people.

There is no sane reason why an
ebook should cost more

hardcover, but lo and behold, that's the case with my Sex, Bombs and Burgers.
When I look through the Kindle store and see
ebooks priced higher
than the paperback and
hardcover, it seems to me that they are trying to push readers back to that more traditional medium.

Then often the
ebook price is just 2 - 3 Euros lower then
than the price for the
hardcover book, later when you can buy the paperback it is usually cheaper
than the
ebook, because that was priced after the
hardcover and since book prices are fixed, it usually can not be changed easily.
This is why a new
ebook almost costs as much as a
hardcover and is normally more expensive
than a paperback.
But as of this writing, Amazon is offering the book for pre-order — something that many mom - and - pop independent bookstores aren't even set up to do — for less
than $ 13 for the
hardcover; the Kindle edition is priced just over $ 11, while Barnes and Noble and Kobo are offering the
ebook edition for pre-order for more
than $ 16.
Hmm, going back to what my Tech Guy mentioned about a good
ebook price being 75 % of the paper version, I wonder if some of the difference we see at the higher end is the publisher comparing the price to a
hardcover or trade paperback version rather
than the mass paperback format.

Their profit margins on
hardcovers are bigger
than paperbacks and
ebooks, ergo it's in their interest to protect
hardcover sales.
They'd be much more likely to adopt Amazon's Kindle ereaders if they thought they could find new books for much less
than they could by 1) buying Amazon's own
hardcovers or 2) shopping at the local bookseller (think retail discounter and current
ebook competitor Barnes and Noble).

They tend to read really fast and a lot of books, so because the
eBook tends to be a little less expensive

than paperbacks», I think you would have gotten more specific, useful data about what book buyers think regarding
ebook prices.

My argument is that when
eBooks are done right they so much cheaper
than physical books (40 - 50 % cheaper) that if they were reasonably priced they'd turn
hardcovers into high - end items.
