In order to determine the cause of the itchiness, veterinarians recommend a variety of tests
including ear swab analysis, skin scrapings, hormone panels and skin biopsies.
Therefore, it is very important to have all ear infections rechecked a few days after treatment is completed so that
new ear swabs can be taken and evaluated for the presence of any remaining organisms.

Ear swabs often are taken and the material is evaluated under the microscope to look for causes of otitis such as yeast ear mite or bacterias.
Toiletries: Baby soap, baby shampoo,
ear swabs, nail clippers, diaper rash ointment, and baby lotion.
This ear swab will determine if mites, bacteria, or yeast are present.
You should mention that your clinic always «makes a diagnosis before treating», and, that your doctor is examining
an ear swab of the ears as you speak.
Our highly trained technicians evaluate urine, skin scrapings,
ear swabs and fecal samples using a variety of equipment like the microscope, refractometer and centrifuge.
Your veterinarian will use a device called an otoscope to look into the ear or will take a sample of any ear discharge with
an ear swab.
For example, crusty eyes will be tested for tear production, or a brown discharge in the ears will provoke
an ear swab and a microscopic examination of the discharge to determine the best medication to clear it up.
In order to diagnose an infection,
ear swabs are taken from deep within the ear canal and evaluated under the microscope (this is called ear cytology).
For a pet with localized demodicosis of the ear, the mites may be seen when
an ear swab is rolled in mineral oil on the slide and the collected material covered with a cover slip, just as is seen with Otodectes cytology preps.
The choice of medication your veterinarian will prescribe depends upon the findings of an examination and any necessary ancillary tests, such as a fecal examination for intestinal parasites or microscopic examination of a skin sample or
an ear swab for ear mites.

The Vet will take a skin sample and take
an ear swab to check for a bacterial skin infection or yeast infection.
My technician collects
an ear swab sample from patient A while I talk with the 7 PM appointment (patient B's owner), and collect the ear swab.
I go back and look at patient A's
ear swab while my tech stains patient B's ear swab.
