Uncontrollable, explosive bouts of anger such a road rage might be the result of
an earlier brain infection from the toxoplasmosis parasite, an organism found in cat feces, a new study finds.

• During
early and late states of
infection, Zika RNA was detected in tissues, including the
brain and male and female reproductive tissues.
As well as revealing step by step how disease and
infection can aggravate and accelerate the
early stages of Alzheimer's, Perry and his colleague Clive Holmes have begun a pioneering trial in 40 people to see if a drug that acts to dampen inflammation in the body can help delay the progress of the
brain disease.
«The viruses collect in the spaces between
brain cells during the
early stages of
infection,» Harris said.
The
earlier models were not as clinically relevant because the
infections were generated by injecting the virus directly into the
brain.
Linda Bartoshuk, a University of Florida researcher who studies how taste perception affects health, knew from
earlier research that middle - ear
infections can damage the chorda tympani, the nerve that carries taste information from the front of the tongue to the
brain.
Looking for immune abnormalities throughout the lifespan of the mice, the group found that most immune system components stayed the same in number, but a type of
brain - resident immune cells called microglia that are known first responders to
infection begin to divide and change
early in the disease.
This can lead to substantially higher
early viral loads, which in turn can increase the chance of the
infection spreading to the
brain and worsen clinical outcome.
Those mouse pups born after an
early infection were likely to have thinner cortexes and have inflammatory cells in the
brain, while those born to mothers who had a later
infection were much less likely to suffer those effects.
In addition to her expert skill as a clinician, Dr. Frontera also has many research interests including identifying biomarkers and predictors of
early brain injury and vasospasm / delayed cerebral ischemia after subarachnoid hemorrhage and their impact on outcome; determining the efficacy of therapeutic strategies and developing guidelines for the management of patients with intracranial hemorrhage; evaluating the cost, length of stay, quality of life, functional and cognitive outcomes in a broader population of intracranial hemorrhage patients; developing guidelines for the integration of palliative care into the intensive care unit setting; and evaluating the relationship of Zika virus
infection, Guillain - Barre, and other neurologic disorders.
Early evidence suggests that
infections during pregnancy may alter
brain anatomy by driving neuronal proliferation and lead to learning problems.
Early infection with attenuated Type I parasites was accompanied by a modest increase in total
brain leukocytes (Figure 3E).
[D] Some attenuated Type I - infected animals have detectable parasite in
brain regions
early during acute
infection, decreasing to undetectable levels (average of uninfected indicated by black dashed line).
This suggests that T. gondii - mediated interruption of mouse innate aversion toward cat urine may occur during
early acute
infection in a permanent manner, not requiring persistence of parasite cysts or continuing
brain inflammation.
Contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito or through sexual or other modes of transmission, Zika virus (ZIKV)
infection can be prenatally passed from mother to fetus.1 The virus was first identified in the region of the Americas in
early 2015, when local transmission was reported in Brazil.2 Six months later, a notable increase in the number of infants with congenital microcephaly was observed in northeast Brazil.3, 4 Clinical, epidemiologic, and laboratory evidence led investigators to conclude that intrauterine ZIKV
infection was a cause of microcephaly and serious
brain anomalies.5 - 7 However, as with other newly recognized teratogens, these features likely represent a portion of a broader spectrum.
A growing body of data shows that an
infection early in pregnancy can permanently harm a developing baby's
brain.
The included birth defects were based primarily on case reports of outcomes occurring in association with Zika virus
infection during pregnancy; there is more evidence for some of these birth defects than for others, and a causal link has not been established for all.5,10,12,21 - 27 Because much of the focus to date has been on microcephaly and
brain abnormalities, data were summarized in 2 mutually exclusive categories: (1)
brain abnormalities with or without microcephaly regardless of the presence of additional birth defects and (2) neural tube defects and other
early brain malformations, eye abnormalities, and other consequences of central nervous system dysfunction among those without evident
brain abnormalities or microcephaly.
Why the illness appears
earlier in some is a mystery, but there is evidence that some children (1 in 1,000) may develop the disorder after a strep
infection, when an antibody generated to fight the bacteria mistakenly turns against a
brain enzyme and disrupts communication between neurons.
In this talk you will learn how to recognize
early signs of cognitive dysfunction, identify «
brain» foods to boost immune systems, look for warning signs of urinary
infections, bladder stones and other issues from the litter box and outside potty breaks, and finally identify ways to aid senior pets with mobility issues.
