There is an order - isomorphism between the following two sets: the set (ordered by later)
of the actual
occasions in the causal past
of a given subject actual
occasion, and the set (ordered by
earlier)
of the simple physical feelings in the process
of concrescence

The former principle blurs the distinction because its doctrine
of efficient causation requires that
earlier occasions be present in, and hence characterize, later
occasions.
The fact that actual

occasion B is an absolute fact: it holds for every observer (or frame
of reference).4
By the repetition, or causal objectification,
of an
earlier occasion in a later one, let me hasten to add, Whitehead did not mean, as so many
of his interpreters have erroneously taken him to mean, merely that some eternal object ingressed in the
earlier occasion is also ingressed in the later
occasion.
Therefore, even though there are no space - time distances between an actual
occasions feelings, it is metaphysically possible for some
of those feelings to be
earlier than others.

Consequently whenever one actual
occasion is
earlier than another — and they both are members
of these dominant societies — there is a space - time distance between them.
More explicitly; the formal properties

occasions are these: it is irreflexive, asymmetric, and transitive; but it is not connected.

To reduce causal objectification, and thereby the immanence
of the

of eternal objects, is to make the repetition
of occasions a sham repetition.
But as we understand Whitehead, the passage from the indeterminacy
of the initial phases
of concrescence, through the intermediate phases to the final phase, satisfaction, is a process which concretizes or actualizes the
occasion itself, and the
occasion is not actual until the process is complete.9 If so, the indeterminacy
of the
earlier phases
of concrescence is a radical or absolute indeterminacy inconsistent with the passage
of time, for there is nothing as yet actual for which time could pass; thus, concrescence is a process in a metaphorical or figurative sense, and this is why Whitehead associates concrescence with creativity, calling creativity the Category
of the Ultimate, meaning that though it is used to explain all else, it is not explicable.
In his final theory physical theories receive their complete integration in the very last phase
of concrescence, but this intermediate theory follows naturally enough from
earlier concepts in which mental
occasions superseded physical ones.
The usual assertions are (1) that this kind
of religion is today on the defensive; (2) that the defensive posture is
occasioned by the flourishing
of «conservative churches» (although the alleged liberal enervation is also seen in more autonomous terms); (3) that the growth in religious conservatism and conservative churches is itself the result
of widespread reaction against «secular humanist» values and against those who hold such values; (4) that our society as a whole has been experiencing a breakdown in moral consensus, a loss
of moral coherence somehow connected with a decline in oldline Protestant dominance; and (5) that some or all
of these happenings have been quite sudden, so that the
early 1960s can be taken as a kind
of benchmark — as a time before the fall.
Whitehead's reconciliation involved combining the
earlier point, that all actualities in the world are
occasions of experience, with the idea that God is the chief exemplification, not the exception to, the metaphysical principles applicable to all finite actualities.
While the other main texts on the objective lure stem from an
earlier chapter on «The Order
of Nature» (II.3 C), closer scrutiny suggests that they belong to a single insertion, made during the transitional period (C +) before Whitehead reconceived concrescence in terms
of the prehension
of past
occasions.8
These statements give something
of the flavor
of this
early theory: «the first stage
of the process
of feeling is the reception into the responsive conformity
of feeling whereby the datum, which is mere potentiality, becomes the individualized basis for a complex unity
of realization» (PR 113C).3 Or, later, «The objectified particular
occasions together have the unity
of a datum for the creative concrescence» (PR 210C).
As long as Whitehead had confidence in the adequacy
of his
early theory
of prehension (in SMW), the datum theory
of an
occasion's unity held.

of the many
occasions for sharing in the
early stages
of intimacy there gradually develops a community
