early, oceanographer Melissa Omand now leads
research cruises studying how carbon and nutrients move through the seas.
UNOLS is seeking applications from
early career scientists at U.S. universities who are interested in participating in an oceanographic
research cruise that will continue an investigation of a chain of seamounts west of the East Pacific Rise at 8 ° 20» N followed by a detailed survey the East Pacific Rise ~ 9 ° 50» N that last erupted in 2005 - 2006.
All of these photographs were taken by Sophia Tintori during a
research cruise last year, except the control room photograph, which was taken by Stefan Siebert on a
cruise earlier this month.
The most successful
research cruises are typically the ones that are planned
early, with an awareness of both the big picture and the fine details.
As to the salinity question, the NOAA
research ships had noted in
earlier cruises that for the ice melt the salinity though lower then normal for open ocean demonstrate only a thin fresh / brackish water zone.
Dr. Nancy Rabalais, executive director of LUMCON and chief scientist aboard the
research vessel Pelican, was unsure what would be found because of recent weather, but an
earlier cruise by a NOAA fisheries team found hypoxia off the Galveston, Texas area.
