Perhaps it's unsurprising that a video game, based on a comic book, based on
earlier video games feels like it's spreading its inspiration a bit thin.

earlier, swimming underwater is the only aspect of the core gameplay that registers as subpar,
feeling a little like swimming used to
feel in
video games before analog controllers were all the rage: awkward and ungraceful.
Looking at his channel now it still seems that he does nothing but gameplay
videos with his review copies now which is a bit of a shame, since I do remember he wasn't afraid to promote the
games in other clever ways at an
earlier point in his YT channel (Which
felt more down - to - earth and honest).

I would search Youtube like a soldier on a recovery mission to get any
videos I could from
gamers who received the
game earlier and
felt obligated to post their
game videos.
I do
feel like
game design was simpler in those
earliest days of
video games.
Being an elder
gamer made the gameplay
feel nostalgic and fun over dated, but again, when I put on my
video -
game - blogger - hat I have to wonder if younger
gamers — say those in their teens and
early twenties — will probably discount the
game as a whole because it doesn't
feel like a modern title.
That said, I always
feel I owe
early video game RPG's for the impact they had and still have.
Sure, we had a ton of Full Motion
Video games in the
early 90's (thanks, Sega), but even though they had actual live action actors, they didn't quite capture the cinematic
feel that the first Metal Gear Solid did at the time.
Alwa's Awakening is a wonderful
game and I think it belongs right up there with Cave Story, Shovel Knight and other indie retro releases that borrow the best elements of the
earlier eras of
video games while still injecting their own character, design, and level building that makes the
game feel like a new experience.
