A recent and compelling study entitled Neurons to Neighborhoods, conducted by the Board on Children, Youth, and Families of the Institute of Medicine, calls attention to the importance of
early emotional development in young children.1 Based on a careful review of neuroscience and developmental research, it highlights compelling evidence that a child's earliest experiences and relationships set the stage for how a child manages feelings and impulses, and relates to others.
From May 2003 to March 2005, children aged 3 to 5.11 years were recruited from pediatricians» offices, daycare centers, and preschools in the St Louis metropolitan area using the Preschool Feelings Checklist (PFC).34 Approximately 6000 PFCs were distributed to recruitment sites and 1474 PFCs (25 %) were returned to
the Early Emotional Development Program.
