A recent study published in the Infant Mental Health Journal underscored the importance of
father involvement in the
early months of life and its positive effect on learning.
In a meta - analysis of sixty - three studies of nonresident
fathers and their children, Joan Gilbreth and I found that children had higher academic achievement and fewer emotional and conduct problems when nonresident
fathers were closely involved in their lives.48 We also found that studies of nonresident

earlier studies to report positive effects of
father involvement.

father involvement and child wellbeing in the domains of academic achievement, emotional health, and employment stability.3 However, CFRP's findings suggest the impact of a

Much
early research on
fathering used a theoretical conceptualisation of
father involvement in terms of engagement (direct interaction with the child, for example, in play or routine care), accessibility (the
father being available when needed), and responsibility (provision of resources)(Lamb, Pleck, Charnov & Levine, 1987).
In this section, we use information gathered directly from
fathers when their child was aged 2 years to assess whether
fathers» mental health, relationship with the mother, work - life balance and
