Almost all modified reserves are intended to accumulate lower reserves
in early policy years than they would under the net level premium method.
For this reason, the policies are dramatically overpriced and some companies included a death benefit payout ceiling in
the early policy year called a graded death benefit option.
They start out high in
the early policy years, and then slowly decrease until they disappear — possibly around years 15 or 20, ACLI's Graham says.
Depending on the insurance company, ROP term builds guaranteed cash values in
the early policy years that will equal the total premiums paid by the end level term period.
Graded Premium Whole Life — A graded premium policy will also offer premiums that are discounted in
the early policy years.
However, with this type of life insurance coverage, there is an initial premium discount in
the early policy years, as well as only one premium increase in the future.
This means that a policy is of greatest benefit to an owner when it is well funded in
the early policy years when insurance costs are lowest.
During
the early policy years, the cash value is the reserve less a surrender charge.
