Paloma is currently obsessed with apple sauce and
eats it with
breakfast and as a snack at
school, so a pot of stewing apples
on the stovetop has been a weekly occurrence in my kitchen.
For example, when I wrote my free Guide to Getting Junk Food Out of Your Child's Classroom and, more recently, when I researched my Civil
Eats story
on sugary
school breakfasts, it was surprisingly hard to find reliable added - sugar recommendations for children.
Most importantly, given the almost 14 million kids who
eat school breakfast every day, I'm hopeful that the AHA recommendation, along with the new DGA
on added sugar, will eventually make insanely sugary
school breakfasts like this one (offered in my district before recent reforms were instituted) a thing of the past:
Children who
eat breakfast at
school — closer to test - taking time — perform better
on standardized tests than those who skip
breakfast or
eat breakfast at home.
As I noted my 2015 Civil

Today I have a piece
on Civil
Eats delving into some of the surprising reasons why sugary
school breakfasts are so common nationwide, even after the 2010
school meal overhaul.
Almost exactly one year ago, I wrote a piece for Civil
Eats asking a question that had been
on my mind for several years: why are
school breakfasts often loaded with added sugars, even after the implementation of the Healthy, Hunger - Free Kids Act nutritional reforms?
Soon after the Civil
Eats piece came out, four Nutrition Services employees devoted what must have been considerable time and effort (not to mention the taxpayer dollars that directly pay their salaries) to write a scholarly article for the Journal of Applied Research
on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk entitled «Sugar In
School Breakfasts: A
School District» s Perspective.»
Studies show that children who
eat breakfast at the start of their
school day have higher math and reading scores, and demonstrate a sharper memory and faster speeds
on cognitive tests.
These are just a few examples of how
breakfast - in - the - classroom has been used as a creative tool for administrators and educators to address food insecurity, disciplinary issues, tardiness and absenteeism, and trips to the
school nurse — and that's
on top of improved academic outcomes for students who
eat school breakfast!
It can be helpful to make a list of the things to do before leaving for
school (get dressed,
eat breakfast, brush teeth, put shoes
on, make bed, turn off bedroom light, etc.) and the reward options for them if everything is done before they leave (TV, games, play time, etc.).

This Healthy

on the way in to
school, or in between morning classes for

Super-sugary

My teenager and I reached a compromise: she must
eat breakfast before leaving the house and go to sleep earlier
on school nights.

Research shows that students who

Breakfast can be hit or miss, depending
on if your teen is getting out of bed early enough to
eat before
school.

on sugary
school breakfast and how to address the matter in your district, be sure to read my Civil
Eats piece and also listen to my recent interview
on the topic at Sally Kuzemchak and Dina Rose's The Happy Bite podcast.
Rather than focusing
on the number of calories available at lunch, efforts should be made to ensure that children are
eating breakfast whether at home or at
school.
On weekdays she skips
breakfast and
eats lunch at
school as well as an after
school snack and dinner at home.
Thirty - one million children
eat school lunches, and nearly 15 million get
school breakfasts on an average day.
Serve a special
breakfast on the first day of
school or pick a restaurant where you'll
eat on the first day every year.
National studies show that students who
eat school breakfast are more likely to: reach higher levels of math achievement; score higher
on tests; have better concentration, memory and alertness, improved attendance, behavior, and academic performance; and maintain a healthy weight
Studies have shown that students who
eat breakfast at
school score better
on standardized tests and skip
school or are tardy less often.
Here's how it came about - I was lamenting
on Instagram about the note JJ's teacher sent home saying that he had
eaten his entire lunch when he got to
school first thing in the morning (and I'm not sure how that happened if they were keeping an eye
on him and he had
eaten a full
breakfast before he got
on the bus...... but I regress).
These are just a few examples of where
breakfast - in - the - classroom has become a tool for administrators and educators to address food insecurity, disciplinary issues, tardies and absences, and trips to the
school nurse — and that's
on top of improved academic outcomes for students who
eat school breakfast!
In addition to meeting the students where they already are — in the hallway — it allows
school nutrition staff to take back the responsibility of handing out food from teaching staff, who can then focus all of their attention
on starting the
school day as students
eat breakfast.
Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry campaign reported in 2013 that
on average, students who
eat school breakfast attend 1.5 more days of
school per year and score 17.5 percent higher
on standardized math tests; when combined, these factors translate into a student being twenty percent more likely to graduate high
school.
From waking up, to bathing, to
eating breakfast, to heading to daycare or
school, make sure your mornings go smoothly to get off
on the right foot.

Research shows that kids who
eat breakfast at
school perform better
on standardized tests, exhibit better classroom behavior, and are less likely to be overweight.
This means if you let your kid
eat a
breakfast of pop tarts or crappy cereal, and then send them to
school to sit by someone
on the bus or in the classroom who's coughing or sneezing, they're an EASY TARGET for the germs to set up house and proliferate.
However, the studies that surround these theories have had very mixed results, a longitudinal study
on school children missing
breakfast found that some who never
ate the first meal of the day lost weight, while others gained it [1].
2) Sometimes I will
eat ice cream or frosting for
breakfast 3) My best purchase ever was my dog, Liat 4) I still love glitter (and when I was a kid I tried putting glitter
on every
school project, even when it was completely inappropriate) and 5) I'm so thankful to have met bloggers like you through out this journey.
Today, I woke up at 5:30, got everyone
breakfast, took Cooper to
school, ran 3 miles, worked legs, was super productive
on the internets, got Callan down for a nap and am just about to
eat lunch.
Responses might include
eating a good
breakfast, getting a good night's sleep, knowing how to deal with stress, getting to the test center /
school early, and so
on.
However, we are also able to cross-reference that inference with context: how does the student usually respond to lessons, what is going
on at home, what are you noticing in the general social dynamics of the classroom, did they get in an argument with their best friend this morning, did they
eat breakfast, did they sleep well, was a new video game released yesterday, is it particularly humid in the building today, what's going
on in the general
school culture right now, has this student been taking tests all day, are elements like depression or anxiety potentially relevant, or is it just an «off day» for a great student?
To fight chronic absenteeism the district is creating programs that get kids excited about
school, like adult mentors who
eat breakfast with students, and offering targeted help based
on the problems each student is facing.
Most are based
on the traditional model of
school breakfast as
eaten in the cafeteria before
school.
The Center identified a pattern of «gate keeping» behavior
on the part of the
schools, such as
school officials who told parents a
school was «not for them,» that the
school application required a photo, and that they could not sit by their kids at
breakfast drop - off for fear of the parent
eating the free food (quoted in Aggarwal, 2014).
Children who
eat breakfast at
school perform better
on standardized tests than those who skip
breakfast or
eat breakfast at home.
