The two main
causes of a «broken» metabolism — severe
calorie restriction and excessive exercise (especially cardio),
cause a negative feedback loop that «requires» you to
eat less and less and exercise
more and
more to maintain your pace of weight loss.
Even if you don't need the extra protein to help maintain muscle mass while you're
eating at maintenance, it can help you burn around 80 — 100
calories more per day, which, in some cases, is enough to help offset the drop in resting metabolic rate
caused by dieting.
If they don't
eat more fat than we need (which is very little, around 10 % of
calories OR LESS) then their blood sugars are fine, even if they
eat dozens of pieces of fruit per day, and even if they
eat table sugar (which is definitely not healthy... but it will not
