I do agree with your jab
at DRM being a scam (somewhat), but the fact that it doesn't support any DRM format does make it less of an ereader if you can't buy
ebooks for the thing from 95 % of
ebook stores — no
bestsellers, no popular new releases, no major publishers or authors.
Amazon has given in to Macmillan, and will switch to a pricing model that sees
eBook versions of
bestseller and new hardcover releases offered to customers
at $ 12.99 to $ 14.99.

I know David Gaughran has some fairly accurate estimations that he's used before, but here's a what if for you: What if you could accurately model Amazon's
ebook sales using data submitted by selfpub authors (which I remember seeing a blogger on the Writer's Cafe who was already doing this with extreme accuracy) combined with a sliding scale, using the same data, to determine sales
at any given time (because being the # 5
bestseller in the Mystery category on Tuesday doesn't mean the same sales on Thursday).
Over 82 % of those
ebooks are priced
at $ 9.99 or less, including 74 of the 107 New York Times
Bestsellers.
