because it is entirely possible for someone to be able to use a Kindle to access many types of
eBook formats and DRM (just as they can with an iPad), but Amazon intentionally prevents this.
To me it's a big turn - off,
because it's just one more thing to tie you into the Amazon ecosystem, but if you're fine with having to upload everything to their server and don't mind that their readers still don't support the world's most popular
ebook format, then go for it.
Pocketbook was the sort of company that many tech savvy users liked
because the devices had support for over nine different

I've consciously chosen to buy most
eBooks from Kobo
because of Amazon's proprietary
formats, exactly to avoid having to convert
eBooks.
