My tentative conclusions are these: 1)
ebooks are «leveling» the playing field for female
authors since, for the first time in publishing history,

and traditional publishing has always favored males (to date).

eBook revolution is an exciting thing
and authors can be part of it
and realize their dreams of sharing their work with

What does an
ebooks marketplace look like if, in addition to libraries, content providers are equally committed to a sustainable ecosystem that enables viability for all players — publishers, vendors,

and, of course,
readers?
Hopefully, the absence of some major
authors from
eBook stores will be temporary — but in the meantime, you could be forgiven for thinking that publishers really do want to hand all the cards to Amazon — they're the cheapest
and, for whatever reason, they are now the ones with the biggest range of books, some of which UK
readers can not, right now, buy electronically in a format compatible with their own devices.
Anyway, I think you're right
and those
authors will find more
and more
readers falling into that «harsh» category of judging their time to be more important than the
ebook price.
Selling your own
ebooks means that you can have more than one publisher — say, a UK
and a US one —
and sell on behalf of both of them, meaning that
readers anywhere in the world come to one site to buy their books,
and the
author takes care of figuring out which publisher gets the payment from that purchase.
In fact, more
and more
authors are focusing their sales
and marketing efforts on their
eBook with the printed book being an «extra» available for print book
readers and bookstores through CreateSpace
and / or Lightning Source.
This is one dilemma owners of Kindles, Nooks
and iPads inevitably face: How the hell can I get my favorite
author to sign that book I've got stored in my
Ebook reader?

and ebook theives will find a way to downloaded pirated copies anyway — they are much smarter at it than publishers,
authors and readers combined.
An
eBook that allows an
author to change section, to move up plot points depending on
reader input, to change the entire setting based on a
reader's location — that is a wholly different genre than that of regular books,
and is obviously where we're heading (some of the more adventurous of us).
It won't be the first time a prominent
author has gone exclusive for an
ebook reader — Stephen King's Kindle arrangement is probably the most notable example — but those deals often had planned hardcover versions coming out eventually,
and didn't include the multimedia aspects that A Singing Whale will.
