StoryBundle, the program that launched earlier this year that lets
readers pay whatever they think is fair for a
group of five to seven indie
ebook titles, has now posted its second bundle.
GoodEReader has been following the workings of a non-profit
group, Worldreader, and their efforts to bring digital
readers and
ebooks to outlying areas that are currently limited in terms of access to books, especially for public school students.
At the time, Raccah was excited about the near - future of enhanced
ebooks for middle grade and young adult
readers, promising that big things were on the horizon for an age
group that has been largely forgotten by so many of the enhanced
ebook publishers.
I'm not convinced, though, that
readers in
Groups 2 and 3 either want
ebooks or are well served by
ebooks, even though they can read them on mobiles.
Late last year, the industry
group behind the five year old EPUB standard released its successor, EPUB3, which will appear in
ebook readers and apps during 2012.
I think these subscription services will help make the
ebook reading experience more accessible, desirable and enjoyable to a new
group of
readers who prefer the convenience of subscription access.

eBook reader included as either part of the application itself, or perhaps it may be
grouped together with a customized eReader «
reader» application from a vendor other than Apple.

readers know that the private
eBook group is currently open to join if they are interested in sneak peeks, updates, and having the chance to give their input on the book's development.

There are
ebooks that adults purchase which are not for
readers of certain age
groups.
My own guess, based on watching my sales profile over the years, is that print,
eBook and audiobook do not inherently cannibalize each others» sales — it seems to me that for each there is a class of
reader that is «native» to each — that is, there is a
group of
readers who strongly prefers print over
eBook or audio, another
group who prefers
eBook strongly to the other formats, and a third
group (correlated, I imagine, with people who have long commutes) who strongly prefer audiobook.
E.g by promoting both the publishers name and the editors name in
ebook titles (and refuse to sell to stores where these are not equally as browsable attributes as author and title - unlike movies currently I only rarely know the editor / publisher of my favourite books) and redirect remaining marketing spend to fund fan /
reader groups to gain «seed knowledge» to push recommendations as to who will like their new authors (ie feeding «if you liked the books of Charles Stross, why not try Richard Winslade's new opus» into amazon's recommendation engine, but with an eye to maximise the authors / editor / publishing houselong term brand appreciation rather than short term sales through erroneous linking only to top 10 authors).
For myself, I work with various people at different levels (critique
group, beta
readers, proofreader, book cover artist, and editor) before I dare to make the manuscript public as an
ebook and paperback.
You can add them all to the secret
group, email them, or upload them to a service like Bookfunnel, which not only provides a single link, but provides instructions for
readers who might not know how to load up the
ebooks themselves.
The paper assessed two
groups; half read a normal printed book for four hours before bedtime for five consecutive nights, while the other
group read a light - emitting
ebook reader for the same period.
It is based on my experience of such reading, several hours a week — not on a focus
group or phone research or even talking with other people about how
ebook readers have changed them from thinking of themselves as «lovers of books» into thinking of themselves as «lovers of reading,» as it has me.
