Last October, I stopped using BN because of this policy / technical change where I can no longer download
ebooks from my library using MY encryption key to a technology neutral platform.
It won't recognize the reader when I want to transfer
an ebook from the library using overdrive media.

library, then visit the appropriate lending desk to have the title loaded onto a NOOK GlowLight.
Patrons can borrow a digital book
from their local
libraries (as long as its an Overdrive supported one) or they can buy
eBooks (
from a company
using Overdrives WhiteLabel Bookstore system).
Calibre's features include:
library management; format conversion (all major
ebook formats); syncing to e-book reader devices; fetching news
from the Web and converting it into
ebook form; viewing many different e-book formats; giving you access to your book collection over the internet
using just a browser.
ReadersFirst doesn't sanction or promote any device; however, since many
library eBook readers
use Kindles (and often not the newest version), we thought we'd share this news
from Amazon, mostly so that our member librarians know and can be ready to answer trouble - shooting questions

The new fonts are really nice, so is the direct
library downloads, and the Wi - Fi is good for getting
ebooks and
using the browser, which can download
ebooks too, even
from Kobo, as I just found out.

This software is also required for people who borrow
eBooks from the
library and aren't
using an official app
from 3M, Baker & Taylor or Overdrive.
I enjoy
using both mediums and own an
ebook reader that I
use on a weekly basis (Kobo Aura One allows me to borrow
from the
library directly
from the reader while I am working abroad, how awesome is that?)
cloudLibrary (formerly 3M Cloud
Library) is the easiest to
use so it is my preference for
ebooks and audiobooks
from my
library.
One of the benefits to the subscriber
libraries that comes
from using a subscription model, at least at the onset of
ebook lending, is it allows them to track patron usage, user interest, and overall lending data so that they can do a better job of applying their budgets to digital content.
OverDrive Support: All Kobo ereaders support OverDrive for getting free
ebooks from public
libraries, but only the Kobo Aura One has onboard support to download the books directly
from the Kobo store; all other Kobo's require sideloading the
ebooks using a computer.

Or, if you're planning to borrow
ebooks from the
library, check your local branch to see what format is in
use, and then make sure the reader you want supports it.
Borrow
eBooks from many public
libraries for
use with Digital Editions.
You can get
ebooks from a wide range of
ebook stores and even get free
ebooks from local
libraries using a service called Overdrive.
If a patron
used the EAF app to download
ebooks from our catalog, tries five titles, and can't get through any of them because they aren't good, that patron will stop borrowing our titles because they no longer trust us, and
libraries will stop buying our catalog.
Another really cool addition is integration with Overdrive to download
ebooks for free
from public
libraries directly without having to
use a computer and Adobe Digital Editions.
With this feature, you can access your
ebook library from anywhere since it is synced automatically with the devices that you
use.
You can
use Bluefire to read DRM encrypted
ebooks from other bookstores or, potentially,
libraries, many of which
use the Adobe DRM system to expire
ebooks at the end of their loan period.
They don't want to give any reader, including the
library patron, another reason to
use a Kindle, because no one borrows a Kindle
ebook from a
library — or even
from OverDrive.
There are a lot of companies that are doing big, positive things and
Libraries can
use that and embrace
eBooks and stay away
from the new breed of middle - men who'll suck them dry.
Previously if you wanted to get
ebooks from your
library you had to download everything to a computer and then sideload the files
using Adobe Digital Editions and a USB cable — rather inconvenient for a wireless device.
I could
use it for
ebooks from the
library, if I was willing to jump through some hoops (that process was fairly teeth - grinding the first time).
On the other hand, having become quite
used to borrowing
ebooks from my public
library I was upset to find the ubiquitous
library lending app Overdrive not supported here.
All of Kobo's ereaders support getting free
ebooks from public
libraries, but they require
using a computer to download and transfer the
ebook to the reader manually.
Its clean and simple interface has both a daytime and nighttime theme to match reading conditions to your environment and you can
use the app to add your own
ebooks (DRM - free epub), upload Microsoft Word documents, paste URLs to specific web pages or even enjoy a classic novel
from the app's built - in
library.
Borrowing
ebooks for free
from public
libraries using OverDrive has always been a great way to legally read
ebooks for free, and now thanks to a new partnership between Zinio and Recorded Books you can get digital copies of dozens of magazines for -LSB-...]
You'll have to sign out of your existing account on the Aura One and then login with your Overdrive credentials, and they you'll still only be able to choose one
library to
use on the Aura One, but you'll be able to sync
ebooks from multiple
libraries.
It's a horrible experience and many people turn away
from using library eBooks at all because of it.
With the Sony you basically just
used its web browser to search and download
ebooks from your
library's mobile website.
The only catch is you'll still only be able to
use one
library to browse for
library ebooks from the Kobo store.
Currently Kobo ereaders require
using a PC to download and transfer
library ebooks from OverDrive
using a USB cable and extra software.
If you borrow
ebooks from multiple
libraries you're not going to be able to
use more than one of them at a time unless you sign out
from one and sign into another.
The basic Kindle can also read PDFs and other document types, and you can
use it to borrow
ebooks from 11,000
libraries across the United States.
Most notably, ePub is
used for
ebook library loans, and is missing
from the Kindle format line - up.
